During a couple of periods of spring weather between the reemergence of winter, I have been weeding our home flower beds to create a foundation for a flower bed transformation to new life and growth in the spring. Transformation in my life has always started in a similar process, although more complex and challenging. Just as I need to distinguish the weeds in the flower bed from the plants to keep, for me, transformation starts with an “aha” moment of internal awareness and taking responsibility for that which does not serve me.
I have been reading the 2023 Unity Booklet “40 Days of Letting Go”. The reading for Ash Wednesday was entitled: “I let go of anger.” I was reminded of how transformation has made a huge difference in my experience of “living.” I was a very angry person twenty years ago. Anger was a coping mechanism for things I didn’t want to be responsible for, fears I had not accepted, and my general inability to accept personal imperfections. I can now let go of anger quickly before erupting, yet growth is still available in shortening that gap between generating and letting go. Today as you read this, we are at least 37 days into various “letting go” opportunities in the booklet, and the authors suggest the booklet is for you to keep and revisit for help in letting go long after Easter. This week starts the “Lessons in Truth” class, and I suspect it will also be an excellent opportunity for reflection and transformation.
I am pleased that Rev. Richard Bunch has been on board with us since February. I cannot imagine what it would have been like without a part-time transitional minister during this period. I have confidence we picked the right person to lead and help us during this transition as we attract and hire a new senior minister.
In gratitude,
Jim Hutson
