Manifesting Christ-Love through Inclusion and Diversity
|
|
In this time of global turmoil, we find ourselves questioning and searching within our hearts for ways to celebrate EVERYONE with the dignity and respect they deserve. Ways are called to live our “Christ” selves are through our thoughts, beliefs, and actions.
This year we will have two opportunities to explore our “Christ” selves by extending our love to others at Pride events. On June 11th, Chesapeake is celebrating Gay Pride, and on June 24th, Norfolk is sponsoring Hampton Roads Pride Day. Unity Renaissance has participated in Pride events since 2018 and is excited to continue celebrating diversity, love, and acceptance in both cities.
As you can imagine, these two opportunities combined can create a way for people to learn about a spiritual community and perhaps a “home” where they can be accepted for who they are.
Join us at both events and let your light shine!
Please contact Debra Amme at 757-288-6760 if you want to assist with the booths and share your thoughts about Unity and inclusivity. There will be a Q&A table set up at church this week to learn more about the events.
In Christ’s love,
Debra

May Diaper Drive: No Child Wet Behind!
May 1-29, 2023
In honor of Mother’s Day, Community Outreach is collecting diapers for those in need during the month of May. Food stamps do not cover diapers, most day care providers require disposable diapers, and the cost of laundry is expensive too. Some families are re-using diapers or leaving a child in wet diapers for longer than is healthy or sanitary. Please help if you can; even opened packages are accepted, and all sizes – especially sizes 4 to 6 – are needed. Adult diapers are also accepted. There will be a collection box in the Narthex from May 1st – 29th. Distribution is managed by the Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank.

Spiritual Cinema is back!
7 p.m. Friday June 16 watch “Soul“
All are welcome! Free Admission, Free popcorn, and discussion to follow the film. The first film in our Summer series is Soul!
What makes you…YOU? Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions. Rated PG.

Expressive Arts Workshop
11 a.m. Monday, June 26
With the beauty of love comes the inevitability of loss: loss of a loved one, loss of health, loss of a job, loss of stability. Through simple art activities, writing, music, and meditation, we will explore the experience of loving someone or something intensely and how we can still hold sacred heart space during and after the occurrence of loss.
Using low-skill immersive art, writing, and visualization activities, we will explore who we really are and how we can safely express ourselves with healthy boundaries, communication, and self-compassion. $30 per person (all supplies provided).

Please submit news of your celebrations, milestones, needs, or challenges to Rev. Ann (revann@unityren.org) or Ellysia Flores (ellysia@unityren.org). Note: Items included only if the person involved (where possible) has given their permission.

Uniteen Spring 2023 “Spirit Quest” Retreat
Thank you for all the loving support of our Uniteens which made it possible for us to take 4 of our up-and-coming leaders to a wonderful experience in Reinholds, PA. The theme was “Spirit Quest”, how we are all connected to each other and the world around us. We spent last weekend getting to know each other better and meeting Uniteens from other churches in the Eastern Region. There were spirit groups, where they learn to connect on a deeper spiritual level and learn more about their own spirituality. The YMCA staff led us through team building and communication building exercises; essential skills as our Uniteens grow into leaders and mentors for our younger youth. There was also archery and other activities during free time. There was great fellowship, accommodations, food, and spiritual growth. On Sunday, there was a special ceremony celebrating the 8th graders moving to YOU; we had one in attendance, Jeremiah Diggs though we will have several Uniteens actually bridging to YOU this year. They have a separate spirit group with lots of meditation, and mask-making of their spirit animal, and then tell the rest of the group what that represents during the ceremony on Sunday, followed by walking a labyrinth. Travis Davis and I were privileged to be able to take our Uniteens on this retreat, thank you to the parents who trusted us to guide them during this retreat. It is a tremendous joy to spend time with such awesome young people. Thank you again for all the love and support shown to our Uniteens and the rest of our youth; it is very much appreciated.
With love and gratitude,
Valerie Winters
