Mother’s Day is happening this Sunday. The word “Mother” can bring up many memories and emotions. I acknowledge that each of us has a unique relationship with our mother. Some have had a nurturing relationship and others not so nurturing. As we know, there are no handbooks or videos telling us how to be the perfect mother, although Dr. Spock tried. Each child has a different personality, different likes and dislikes, and different emotional needs. This creates a challenge for mothers everywhere.
This week, and especially on Sunday, give thanks that your mother birthed you into this world, gave you life and, as best she could, guided you toward adulthood. Sometimes it was a difficult and challenging journey. Some have been best friends with” Mom” and for some, there was the perception Mother was detached, unable to love you or protect you. This was, or is your truth.
In honoring our mothers, we can forgive shortcomings, embrace her as she is and work at developing an adult relationship based on beholding her divinity through the power of forgiveness and unconditional love. As Paul said, “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became an adult, I gave up childish ways.” I Corinthians 13:11
This Sunday, as adults we will serenade, love, and remember our mothers or the person who became the mother figure in your life who blessed you. If possible, please join us with your mother. Let’s celebrate life and remember without a mother we would not be here.
Happy Mother’s Day,
Rev. Richard Bunch

May Diaper Drive: No Child Wet Behind!
May 1-29, 2023
In honor of Mother’s Day, Community Outreach is collecting diapers for those in need during the month of May. Food stamps do not cover diapers, most day care providers require disposable diapers, and the cost of laundry is expensive too. Some families are re-using diapers or leaving a child in wet diapers for longer than is healthy or sanitary. Please help if you can; even opened packages are accepted, and all sizes – especially sizes 4 to 6 – are needed. Adult diapers are also accepted. There will be a collection box in the Narthex from May 1st – 29th. Distribution is managed by the Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank.

Unity Renaissance Boutique Art Gallery presents:
“When Magic Happens”
May – June 2023
Introducing Susan is easiest using her own Artist Statement:
When Magic Happens
I look around and see the world sometimes as small parts and other times as a whole vista. Taking a tiny segment and making it large, I can create an impactful abstract that tells a story; a large vista can calm or excite the emotions.
My camera gathers the subject matter and the magic begins. Images may be merged and layered to create a reverie of dreams. Turquoise, a dominant color in most of my work, can be bright or barely there, creating bold or dreamy moods. And when the “painting” is complete, my words become the poetry that accompanies my art. Step in and look around.
*************
Susan Werby, Photographic Artist and Writer, resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Using her innovative techniques, fine art that often looks like paintings is created. Susan’s prose and poetry, inspired by her art, always accompanies the art. Each artwork is numbered in a Limited Edition series of only 10.
