“Is Prayer Enough?”

February 16, 2018

In the wake of the tragic shooting at a Florida high school, we as a nation have turned to prayer for solace, hope, and the expression of love and compassion. Prayer is how we connect with something greater than our personal selves and, often, with each other. It is how we seek understanding, context, connection, and faith.

Prayer is at the heart of Unity philosophy. However, Unity regards and uses prayer differently from mainstream Christianity. We pray not to petition or influence a super being God to grant our wishes, but to realign our own thinking and change ourselves. We consider prayer a sacred tool for personal transformation. It is a spiritual practice that helps us see rightly, so we can then think and act rightly. Rather than being a substitute for action, prayer is a catalyst for it. First, pray, we say; then, “Put feet under your prayers.”
