“Breaking Free of the Ego”
A five-week class with Tom Baker and Rev. Paula Mekdeci
Based on the book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle. Highly recommended but not required.
In person at Unity Renaissance and on Zoom (hybrid class)
7 p.m. Wednesdays March 9-April 6.
$20 per class session recommended ($100 for five weeks)
Summary:
The workings of the ego, and the results of ego-based consciousness, are both evident and pervasive today. Increased anger, violence, polarization, confusion, and despair can all be linked to ego-based consciousness. This class will help us break free of our attachment to the ego and remember the Truth of who we are, in order to experience and establish greater peace, harmony, and unity in our lives and in our world.
Class Sessions:
Week One (March 9): Ego: The Current State of Humanity – (Based on chapters 1 and 2.) Includes “our inherited dysfunction,” the urgency of transformation, how the ego works, the ego and guilt, what happens when the ego is in charge; the arising new consciousness. Lead: Tom Baker, Rev. Paula supporting. Discussion question for small groups: How are the issues of the day a reflection of our ego consciousness?
Week Two (March 16): The Core of Ego – (Based on chapters 3 and 4.) Includes creating drama; the ego’s need to feel superior; the many faces of ego; the collective ego. Lead: Rev. Paula, Tom Baker supporting. Discussion question for small groups: When are you most aware of your ego? How does it serve you, and how does it hinder you?
Week Three (March 23): The Pain-Body: Carrying the Past – (Based on chapters 5 and 6.) Includes emotions and the ego; the workings of the pain-body; the pain-body in children and women; national and racial pain-bodies; how to break free of identification with the pain-body. Lead: Tom Baker, Rev. Paula supporting. Discussion question for small groups: When do you experience your pain-body? What does it feel like?
Week Four (March 30): Discovering Who You Truly Are – (Based on chapters 7 and 8.) Includes “who you think you are,” the ego and the present moment; allowing the diminishment of ego; recognizing inner space; and losing yourself to find yourself. Lead: Rev. Paula, Tom Baker supporting. Discussion question for small groups: What would it take for you to ‘not mind what happens’?
